Botulinum toxin type A is also known as Botox. It is formed from the bacteria that cause botulism. This substance can be helpful for blocking the nerve activity in the muscles and thus temporarily reducing muscle activity. Botox is used for cosmetic procedures to temporarily reduce facial wrinkles.

This injection prevents signals from nerve cells to muscles. Thus muscles are prohibited from contracting as they would be paralyzed. Release of acetylcholine that causes passage of signals to muscle cells to shorten or contract, is restricted due to injecting Botulinum toxin in skin. Thus the muscles will become less stiff due to this injection and resultantly, there would be no formation of lines and wrinkles on the upper layer of skin caused by smiling and frowning.
Thus patients would get better aesthetic appearance and a younger look as their lines and wrinkles would disappear after about 3 to 5 days. This treatment can be given to elder adults as well for reducing wrinkles and fine lines. Botulinum toxin in various proportions is used in treatments for around twenty medical conditions other than this.
